1 John 4:18 (English Standard Version)
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
I try to search online for commentary about this verse but couldnt really find any. So here’s an attempt to understand this. Feel free to drop some insights yea?
God loves us perfectly (Romans 8:38, 39)
38For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The love here refers to the love of God. And the love of God casts out fear, in another words, there should be no fear at all in us when we receive God’s love perfectly (the only fear should be fear of God as in reverance for Him).
1st way of thinking about fear:
Fear has to do with punishment as the verse says. fear that God will punish us. sometimes we fear that God is not please with something that we do, therefore wants to punish us (which subconsciously believe that God loves us less). But we forgot that God loves us first before we first love Him. How will He loves us less when in the first place we don’t love Him and He already loves us? Clearly this fear comes from us as in we are trying to earn His love. But His love need not be earned!
2nd way of thinking about fear:
Fear that we will lose something and we try our ways and means to keep it as much as possible. this thinking comes when we forgot that God is the giver of all good things. What we have in life is not by chance not by our merit, but by God’s grace. He is the giver of your everything (ie. house, car, parents, friends, work etc). When we try to keep them for fear of losing them, we subconsciously believe that these things are there through the things we do (ie. hard work put in jobs, efforts place in relationships). In the end, we forgot about God.
I think when we can overcome all these nonsense and truly just believe and accept God’s perfect love, we will be so free from all that is in the world. Let us all abide in God’s love – the perfect love. 🙂
